Historically, feng shui was widely used to orient buildings—often spiritually significant structures such as tombs, but also dwellings and other structures—in an auspicious manner. Depending on the particular style of feng shui being used, an auspicious site could be determined by reference to local features such as bodies of water, stars, or a compass. THE ORIGIN OF FENG SUI:

Feng Shui grew out of the practical experience of farmers in southern

China over 3,000 years agos. Thos who built their huts facing north

Were battered by the wind and dust from the Gobi Desert in Mongolia.

In contrast, those who built their huts facing south enjoyed the warmth

Of the sun and protection from the wind. As a result, south became the

favored direction. Over the years, south came to be associatted with

fame, fortune, summer, the color red, and the number nine.

THE SPREAD OF FENG SHUI

Today the work of feng shui masters is in graet demand among Chinese

Populations in Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and the

Philipines. It is estimated that 85 percent of Hong Kong residents

apply feng shui principles when shoosing an apartment or business.

Now the ancient art of feng shui has migrated to the West. In the

United States, for example, dozens of books on feng shui are published

Each year. The influence and popularity of feng shui is no doubt the

result of an increasing number of Asian immigrants, as well as the

result of an ongoing fascination with ancient Eastern practices.

Feng Shui (pronounced "fung schway") has been practiced by people of Chinese descent down through the ages. The practice of Feng Shui combines ancient Chinese wisdom with traditions of the Chinese culture and provides guidelines to be used for different situations or aspirations. Feng Shui is not a religious practice - but a mystical art. I like to think of it as an "applied science" as well.

When studying Feng Shui, one learns the importance of how positioning objects in the home or business can create a harmonious atmosphere. Depending upon each individuals goals, one may focus on certain areas of their life - such as family harmony, prosperity, marital bliss, good health, etc. In Feng Shui, these are called the Eight Life Aspirations. They really all go hand in hand with each other and one should not be excluded in favor of others.

while reading I have learned that one cannot have "tunnel vision" when practicing Feng Shui. One must look at the big picture - and then work your way down from that. For example, it is important not to just focus on the primary goal you are aspiring towards. It is important that you create harmony in your total household and encourage positive chi (energy) to flow. By focusing on just one area of your life you want to enhance, you can be disturbing the balance and harmony of chi. For this reason I will give hints and tips in my newsletters on creating total harmony - not just enriching your life in one area.

Learning the guidelines to Feng Shui can be very complicated. Thus the reason why successful Chinese business owners will hire a Feng Shui Master to help design the layout of a business property in order to ensure the success of their business. Feng Shui is also becoming very popular in the United States as people are seeing very rewarding results by utilizing Feng Shui techniques.

I greatly enjoy the analytical side to Feng Shui. I recommend that anyone interested in achieving a balance in their homes by utilizing Feng Shui techniques have these tools on hand.
