The oldest old: A look at centenarians
This is an interesting topic to talking, and I
interviewed around 320 people (business, students, professional, children and
others). I asked about: what their think about old people, If they are useful, And about residential or nursing homes for older
People… here you are the most common answers:
(Note: I summarized the answers and the ® refers to
the most important)
1.
What do you
think about old people?
(10-25 age) ▬►® Well, it an interesting question! I never met my
grandparent, but I think they are funny.
®They are
very interesting. They keep the members’ family together. I love older people.
® For me, older people are worth more than their own
years. Some of them are rewarding for their experience and other only for their
testimony.
® Wherever
that there are old people they provide
their experience, their knowledge and they keep
emotional value of family and sometimes the children become obedient and
future good citizen. There is an intangible string of emotional attachment
among them. When they are happy in the family, they are happy outside and they
spread this happiness to others as well.
They are who keep the customs, maintain and transmit moral values and
the historical roots.
2.
Are old
people useful? Have they to live in nursing homes?
® There are times when the circumstances of older
people require a high special of personal care, over a 24 hour period and sometimes
it is not possible to receive this attention in your own home.
® There are different situation where we have to
decide what to do. Due to the health,
the mental condition, the financial freedom, the working time, and so on.
® some people think that elderly have two
useless hand but I disagree with that because, in my opinion, the elderly are capable to teach us without
effort in some aspects, they are able to make good decisions regarding who and
what to do in some hard circumstances or how to protect their financial
freedom. In the familiar context to maintain happiness and satisfaction with
one's life they provide significant contribution in the society with education
to child.
The traditional
Dominican defends and respects the centenarian’s people. However, the young or
new culture does not think the same. Day by day we can see contempt and
repudiation in the streets, in their homes… some of them believe in eternal
youth. Do not accept the physical decline.
Some of the interviewed said that they hate elderly because of their behavioral
changes their physical aggression, and verbal outbursts; their depression,
psychosis, or dementia. Someone said: “They are cacarabia”
Finally, youths with more negative age stereotypes will likely have
higher rates of depression as they get older because they do not accept
the life cycle.
