La Fortaleza ozama Is another historical monument that makes up the
colonial zone of Santo Domingo it is named after the Ozama River which
it looks over. It was built from1502 to 1508 by Fray Nicola de Oviedo,
who was the governor of the island, and was built in order to protect
the city from attacks by pirates and conquerors. It was made of stone
and retains its original medieval appearance.
I was there a couple of years ago, and the structure is amazing, both inside and outside.
