Internet addiction

Internet addiction disorder (IAD), or, more broadly, Internet overuse, problematic computer use or pathological computer use, is excessive computer use that interferes with daily life. These terms avoid the term addiction and are not limited to any single cause.
According to Maressa Orzack, director of the Computer Addiction Study at Harvard University's McLean Hospital, between 5% and 10% of Web surfers suffer some form of Web dependency.
Another supporter, David Greenfield of the Center for Internet and Technology Addiction conducted a study with ABC News.com in 1999 and is author of Virtual Addiction. He believes that some services available over the Internet have unique psychological properties which induce dissociation, time distortion, and instant gratification, with about 6% of individuals experiencing some significant impact on their lives. However, he says it may not best be seen as an addiction but rather as a compulsion. Greenfield claims that sex, gaming, gambling, and shopping online can produce a mood-altering effect.
Psychiatrist Dr. Goldberg states that Internet addiction disorder is not a true addiction and may in fact be no more than a symptom of other, existing disorders. An overbroad description of addiction leaves open the possibility of every compensatory behavior being declared an addiction. For example, a person who has lengthy telephone conversations with a friend to avoid an unpleasant situation could be declared "addicted to the telephone" with equal validity as a person who chats on the Internet with the same underlying goal.
Most, if not all "Internet addicts", already fall under existing diagnostic labels. For many individuals, overuse or inappropriate use of the Internet is a manifestation of their depression, anxiety, impulse control disorders, or pathological gambling.  IAD is compared to food addiction, in which patients overeat as a form of self-medication for depression, anxiety, etc., without actually being truly addicted to eating.
Where we can hear. “Seattle Program Claims To Treat Internet Addiction”
Ben Alexander says he's an addict.
The soft-spoken 19-year-old says that around the time he went off to college, he became involved in an online game called "World of Warcraft."
"It fairly quickly got out of hand to where I was missing classes and spending entire days just playing, and not doing anything else," Alexander says.
About to flunk out, Alexander asked his folks for help. His family is now spending $300 a day to keep Alexander away from the Internet. He is the first client at a startup detox program called reSTART, which operates out of a large country home outside Seattle. The house belongs to program co-founder Cosette Dawna Rae, who runs a combination counseling/massage therapy business on the same site. It's a place with goats, doves and chickens.
Alexander helped build a new chicken coop, something he'd never done before. He says outdoor activities suppress his urge to go online. Alexander also gets counseling from Hilarie Cash, a psychologist from suburban Seattle who co-founded the program. Cash has made a career treating what she calls "Internet and technology addiction."
"We know that people tend to get hooked by things that are rewarding, but unpredictably so," she says. "The Internet is just built around that principle."
The Internet can be as habit-forming, Cash says, as alcohol and gambling.
"If you do it compulsively, and despite the negative consequences, then we'd say that's an addiction," she says.
It's a broad definition of addiction — too broad for some people.
"It becomes this catch-all label for anything that people find themselves spending a lot of time doing and find it very enjoyable to do so," says psychologist John Grohol, founder of the mental health Web site PsychCentral.com. "That's not really what an addiction is, traditionally."
Grohol is more inclined to see excessive Internet use as a symptom, not a disease; a symptom of, say, depression.
At reSTART, however, Cash says recognition of Internet addiction will grow, and she is busy recruiting more clients. She has lost track of how many media calls she has had or how many reporters have interviewed the program's young first patient.
Alexander doesn't seem to mind; it's something else to fill the hours, now that he's not online.

Addictions!

My first class was an incredible time of much reflection and learning. I never imagined I would end up writing about how addictions affect our lives in every way. Today, many people still believe addictions are just drugs or alcohol, but what happen if a hobby that maybe it’s '' healthy'' is actually an addiction that is stealing my time with others.

The reality is that any habit, which I become dependent, is an inevitable addiction, since video games until to nail biting. And this first lesson made me think and I realized that all of what I become dependent is a potential addiction.

The reflection for me and others who may read this article is that we must identify what are the things that we depend and by that way we will find our own addiction.

Back in place (addictions)

As we saw in class, all addictions are bad and this was unknown before. I think that  today, there are still lots of people that overlook that reality, specially in under under under developed countries( I imagine you know some good examples)some people still believe that an alcoholic and a drug addict are totally different.
I respect their opinions but I think they're wrong.

Addictions can destroy a person's life at once.I have one testimony to share about one friend of mine. I can't mention the name and you know why.My friend used to be an ambassador in one country(obviously) and had a good salary, plus many other benefits that you can think of.She has one addiction, she is  a gambleholic.she loves to go to the casinos and other places where gambling is common. She was being supervised by a group of diplomats from her country and the country where she was.everything she used to do in that country was being recorded and at the end she was kick out from that country.after that she had to get back to her country and when she got  here she kept going on gambling, she lost her car and all her money and now she lives like a needy person.to me that was a great example and help me a lot to know myself and to control myself too.

I am going to conclude giving a definition of addiction and mentioning  the most common ones. an addiction is the state that results when a person takes in any substance  or engages in an activity  that can be nice but the continued use becomes compulsive and interferes with ordinary life responsibilities or relationships, or health. Users may not be councious that their behavior is out of control and causing problems for themselves and others too.taken and modified by me from:http://www.psychologytoday.com/magazine.The most common ones are:the top ten 1-alcohol addiction, 2-Addiction to smoking, 3-Drug addiction, 4-Gambling Addiction, 5-Food addiction, 6-Video Game Addiction, 7-Internet Addiction, 8-Sex Addiction, 9- Workahilism  and 10-Shopping addiction.taken and modified by me from:http://www.top10de.com/las-10-adicciones-mas-comunes/.
that's all for now.

Internet Addictions

Hello! people. I was researching information on the Internet, where I could find something interesting about Internet Addictions.

There has been a big percentage of people spending their time on the internet rather than spending time with their family, or friends.
Internet use has been categorized as an actual disorder, and has been termed 'Internet Addiction' because of its similarity to addictions like smoking, drinking, and watching too much TV.

There are several reasons and causes why people get addicted to the internet; boredom, loneliness, online TV, social networks, etc. They could be lonely in the way that they're the only child, or they have no friends due to being home schooled, so they waste their time on the internet. Or they could just be bored; they could be home alone, or it could be raining outside, and they can't go out, so they stay in and surf the web. There are also a lot of social networks online like chat rooms, Facebook, Twitter, MSN, and more. People enter social networks to meet new people, and get into virtual online relationships. Entering social networks can also relate to loneliness sometimes.

Spending too much time on the internet can affect you very much. It can interfere with your social life, the addiction can lead to the inability to communicate in the real world, and your family bonding. You could have mixed feelings of guilt while at the computer, and it can also distract you from your work/school related work. And because of the lack of exercise and movement, obesity is a huge symptom. To some people, when you are not on the computer, you think about it frequently and anticipate when you will use it again.

I suppose that if anyone is too addicted to the internet, they should maybe set an alarm clock for only 1-2 hours, to lessen their addiction. Or they could talk to their mothers, or guardians about it, or maybe get a therapist for some help, and try their best to think of all of the effects that could happen to them, and try to stop.

Addictions

Good morning

Yesterday was a great day for me because I learned a lot from the IDI-324 class.I learned  how to be a better person, how to be a better student and  a better professional as well. I think that, all the classes should be like that one we had yesterday morning from 8-12. I have something to say about the topic that we shared  but I can´t now, Do you know why ? well, we are in the Dominican Republic and I have low battery and guess what?no power, a blackout and I have no idea when it's coming back, I mean no clue.I'll get back to you later to share more about addictions and one testimony I have about it.

Shyness: An enemy of personal development

Shyness never takes us to a place of success. It’s necessary to continue our way in a natural way without getting ourselves obstacles because for a good personal development we must socialize   and leave behind shyness, the only place that leads nowhere is to complain every day about what could be and not let in out.

Shyness is usually something that is with you from an early age and although you can work on becoming more confident around people. Being shy refrains  us from many things such as our personal development because if we dare to develop social activities or if we are afraid to express ourselves to people around us at work, at school or college,  and with family members, we will not move forward and develop our human intellect.

Shy people get to create their own world. These people hold on to what makes them feel comfortable and do not leave the circle of the routine where they are. For example, many people prefer to be in front of a computer chatting with strangers instead of having a real contact with friends or co-workers, and for them it is a way to feel more comfortable with themselves, but that’s not the right way or the development that we have as people because speaking in public, being comfortable with a simple conversation without felling afraid of the person we have face to face is not a reason for us to feel uncomfortable or shy.

It’s important to have a high self-esteem to get a good personal development. You won’t be able to change your natural inclination towards introversion. If you enjoy your own company and happen to be rather quiet, this is unlikely to change and thus shyness is something that can shape your whole life, starting from when you go to school and find yourself having to interact with other people. Shyness can also affect the choices you make at school, which will ultimately shape the kind of career you end up with.

In summary, to overcome shyness we must keep in mind that we have to build confidence in ourselves, smile and make eye contact, practice good posture and speak clearly, make new friends, among many thing that are important to leave behind shyness and give importance to our personal development, and the solution of our shyness is not what we expect but what you do to overcome it.
